One of the most common questions I often get asked by new clients is what a typical office visit entails. Because my approach is very different than what most people are used to, even different from most other chiropractors, naturopaths, or acupuncturists (CLICK HERE for more info), I decided to put together a short summary of what you can expect during your initial visit and ongoing treatment with me.
Make AppointmentFirst you'll need to contact me to set up an appointment. There will be paperwork you'll need to fill out prior to your first visit. I can send it to you or you can fill it out by arriving 10-15 minutes prior to your appointment time.
At your visit, I will interview you and discuss your reason for seeking my help, including learning more about your health and medical history. I then will examine you. If I think I can help I will let you know how. If acupuncture is recommended it will be provided the same day. If not, I will provide self-help information or make a referral instead.
First Acupuncture Treatment and Consultation
The goal of treatment during your First Visit is to address the underlying cause of the problem and provide you with some level of immediate relief. This generally includes an abbreviated massage to help us find and locate tight, tender, or painful areas around your body. Depending on what you are being treated for, I will also provide diet and lifestyle consultation, and make any recommendations for herbal or nutritional supplements as necessary.
Depending on your health problem and what you were treated for, most people suffering from muscle pain, stiffness, and discomfort, or stress, anxiety, fatigue, or depression, will feel an immediate change. For some the change will be very dramatic. However often times it will be minor, subtle, or nothing at all. In either case, everyone is generally sent off with self-help information including diet and lifestyle guidelines, to support the acupuncture treatment.
Payment for Initial Visit
Because my fees are reasonable and affordable (First Visit: $40 new patient exam, and $80 for 60 min acupuncture session), payment is expected at the time of service (CLICK HERE for more information).
While I am an out-of-network provider for most PPO plans that offer acupuncture benefits, I rarely will directly bill insurance companies on your behalf unless I know I can receieve reimbursement in a fair and timely manner. More commonly for those people interested in using their insurance I will issue them an invoice for fees paid and instructions for beginning the claims process directly with their provider (CLICK HERE for more information).
Making a Follow-Up Appointment
Unless you really liked what I did and felt like the change was dramatic, following your first treatment I generally take a "wait and see" approach.
This means I typically don't make a follow-up appointment for you right away, instead allowing you to take in the treatment and dive into the self-help information I provided you with. If you later feel like my approach can be of benefit, call me when you want to come back. If not, that's OK too.
Most people will know after one treatment whether or not my approach is going to benefit them. And of these people, most will usually know within 3-5 treatments if my approach and the treatments I'm providing will have a lasting effect.
This does not mean that a single treatment, or three, four, or five, will necessarily provide the complete solution. But it means that we will know within a few visits whether or not my approach can benefit you.
Follow-Up Visits typically involve a continuation of acupuncture treatment and supporting diet and lifestyle consultation, including checking in on your progress and if necessary making or adjusting recommendations for using herbal and nutritional supplements.
Depending on your specific needs and goals, I typically do not advise for you to come in multiple times a week or month (CLICK HERE for more info). When requested, I can provide some general guidelines for receiving ongoing treatment. In general, most clients typically choose to come in once per month. But for the most part I leave this decision up to you and your level of comfort.
Some people with complex or longstanding health conditions may require a more involved evaluation and treatment to get to the root of the problem. In these instances, clients will be referred to a Case Review which involves an in-depth research, analysis and review of your condition, including reviewing relevant lab testing, and comprehensive consultation for dietary and lifestyle modifcation, including the use of supplements (CLICK HERE for more info).
Payment for Follow-Up Visits
Payment for Follow-Up Visits adheres to the same basic standards as for the First Visit. Established clients have the option of choosing between 60 minute ($80), 90 minute ($100), and 120 minute ($140) appointments. Sometimes an additional problem-focused exam is needed ($40) to address new complaints however this is rare. Case Reviews ($200) do not include fees for any related lab work.
Additional services such as Cupping Massage are made available to established patients and can be requested as stand-alone appointments. For more information, please CLICK HERE.
