Chrysanthemum flower is a popular choice for tea all around the world. With its cooling nature, light earthy aroma, and slightly bitter-sweet taste, chrysanthemum flower tea is a great thirst quencher that can be enjoyed in the Summer either hot or cold.

The benefits of longterm consumption of chrysanthemum flower tea have been recognized since the earliest materia medica text, called Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (Divine Husbandman's Classic of the Materia Medica), was written during the Eastern Han Dynasty in China (25–220 CE). The flower is said to be infused with the Qi of the four seasons— it sprouts in the winter, produces leaves in the spring, blossoms in the summer, and reaches full maturity in the fall, and so it used to support normal function of the Kidneys, Liver, Heart, and Lungs.

Key therapeutic characteristics include dispersing wind and heat, quenching dryness, cooling and tonifying the Liver, and resolving toxicity. It can be used as an everyday drink, but generally is combined with other medicinal herbs to enhance its therapeutic actions and treat or prevent a wide number of illnesses including headache, excess body heat, eye disorders, heat stroke, dizziness, and dry mouth and throat.

Most commonly it is enjoyed with lycium fruit, widely known as goji berries or wolfberries (Guo Qi Zi), to enrich the Kidneys and Liver, generate jing, and tonify Qi. However the key to experiencing the healing benefits of chrysanthemum flower tea is said to lie in taking the tea presistenly over a long period of time, rather than taking more in a short period of time to try and get results quicker.

How to Make Chrysanthemum & Goji Berry Tea

Chrysanthemum and goji berry tea is an ideal drink for hot summer days. As well as helping to prevent sunstroke it also clears Heat, benefits Qi, and promotes body fluids. It is an excellent Summer thirst quencher!

Ingredients:

  • 60 - 80 White Chrysanthemum Flowers (Ju Hua)
  • 8 tablespoons of Goji berries (lycium fruit, Gou Qi Zi)
  • 4-8 teaspoons of Jasmine Yinhao Green Tea (optional)
  • 8 teaspoons of rock sugar or honey
  • 4 liters (about 16 cups) water

 

Instructions:

  1. Wash the chrysanthemum and goji berries.
  2. Bring water to a boil and turn off the stove.
  3. Add in rock sugar or honey and dissolve.
  4. Add chrysanthemum flowers and goji berries (if using Jasmine Yinhao Green Tea, also add it here) to water.
  5. Cover and steep for at least 10 minutes.
  6. Strain ingredients from hot water (optional).
  7. Enjoy immediately (if serving warm), or put in refrigerator over night to serve chilled.
